Flat Rate Shipping
Configure flat rate shipping methods to charge a flat rate, flat rate plus per item, or a flat rate per item on orders that are shipped. Typical flat rate shipping options are pre-loaded. You can disable any methods your store doesn’t use and edit or add methods your store offers to customers. Conditions limit when shipping methods are available at checkout, making it easy to offer deals if customers buy more and limit where you ship to.
Only Site Administrators can add, edit, enable, or disable shipping methods.
Select Commerce in the left menu, select E-commerce Settings, select Shipping, then select Shipping Methods page to add, edit, enable, or disable shipping methods.
All components and fields with a red asterisk (*) are required.
Add a flat rate shipping method
In this example, we’ll add a flat-rate shipping method for $0.99 for all domestic orders that are $50 or less.
- On the Shipping methods page, select + Add shipping method.
- Enter ‘$0.99 Domestic Shipping’ for Name.
- Select Flat rate for Plugin.
- Enter ‘Orders $50 and under ship for $0.99’ for Rate label.
- Leave Rate description blank.
- Enter ‘0.99’ for Rate amount.
- Leave Conditions table base logic set to AND so both conditions apply.
- Select Total price from the conditions menu, then select Add to add a condition to check the order total.
- Set the Operator to Less than or equal to and enter 50 for the Amount.
- Select Shipping address from the conditions menu, then select Add to add a condition to check for domestic orders.
- Select All for State.
- Leave Enabled selected so the shipping method displays during checkout.
- Select Save to save the new shipping method with the conditions.
Add a flat rate plus per item shipping method
In this example, we’ll add a shipping method that is a flat rate plus per item and set custom shipping rates for large items.
Add shipping method
- On the Shipping methods page, select + Add shipping method.
- Enter ‘UPS Ground’ for Name.
- Select Flat rate + per item for Plugin.
- Enter ‘UPS Ground’ for Rate label.
- Leave Rate description blank.
- Enter 8.95 for Rate amount.
- Enter 0.95 for Per item amount.
- Add any condition from the list of conditions.
- Leave Enabled selected so the shipping method displays during checkout.
- Select Save to save the new shipping method.
Set custom shipping rate
- Use Search to find large items. For example, search for box sets.
- Select a large product, then select the Edit tab.
- Scroll to Custom shipping rate and enter 15. This overrides the per-item amount set above and increases it by 15%. When a customer adds the item to their order, the per-item shipping cost is $1.09 instead of $0.95.
- Select Save to save the changes to the product.
- Repeat steps 1-4 for each product that needs a higher per-item amount.
Add a flat rate per item shipping method
In this example, we’ll add a flat-rate per-item shipping method for non-book items with different shipping rates.
- On the Shipping methods page, select + Add shipping method.
- Enter ‘Merchandise’ for Name.
- Select Flat rate per item for Plugin.
- Enter ‘Merchandise Ground Shipping’ for Rate label.
- Enter ‘Ground shipping for non-book merchandise’ for Rate description.
- Enter 10.95 for Rate amount.
- Leave Conditions table base logic set to AND so all the conditions apply.
- Select Media Mail Eligible from the conditions menu, then select Add.
- Select Negate. This makes this shipping method available on orders with products that are not media mail eligible.
- Leave Enabled selected so the shipping method displays during checkout.
- Select Save to save the new shipping method.
Edit shipping methods
You can also edit existing shipping methods. Select Edit in the Operations column for the shipping method you want to modify.
To disable shipping methods you no longer use, select Edit in the Operations column, uncheck Enabled, then select Save. The shipping method still displays in the list but can’t be selected at checkout.
Note: We recommend disabling shipping methods instead of deleting them.
